Who Tours with us
Whether you're exploring on your own, traveling with family, or making memories with friends, Footprints in Africa's small group tours offer a unique, personalized travel experience tailored to your needs. If you prefer a private tour, simply let us know—additional rates apply, but the experience will be crafted exclusively for you.
Accommodation on Tour
At Footprints in Africa, we prioritize authentic and intimate experiences by offering accommodations in self-catering villas and guest houses, rather than large hotels, wherever possible. This approach allows us to immerse you in the local charm and culture of each destination.
If the specified accommodations on your itinerary are unavailable, you can rest assured that we will promptly arrange alternate options of equal or superior quality to ensure your comfort.
Budget Option: For a cozy, budget-friendly stay, our "Basic Rooms" provide standard twin/double rooms, sometimes with shared bathrooms. These 3-star accommodations offer comfort without compromising on value.
Comfort Option: For those seeking a bit more comfort, our "Better Standard of Accommodation" features twin/double en-suite rooms. Also rated at 3/4 stars, these rooms offer added amenities and convenience, ensuring a more delightful and enjoyable stay.
Pre/Post Travel arrangements
If you need any accommodation or tours before or after your trip, please let us know when you make your booking. We recommend arriving at least one day before your tour begins and making any onward travel arrangements for the day after the tour ends.
If you plan to fly out of OR Tambo International Airport on the last day of your travels, we suggest reserving a domestic flight that departs no earlier than 20h00 and an international flight that departs no earlier than 21h00. We will not be responsible for any delays or additional travel costs associated with onward arrangements made on the day the tour ends.
Tour Departure/End Point
We offer flexible departure and drop-off points from hotels and locations near airports, ensuring convenience and accessibility every step of the way. Whether you're starting your adventure or wrapping up, we've got you covered with seamless transportation that fits your travel plans perfectly.
Passport and Visas
Before embarking on your adventure through Africa, it's crucial to have all necessary documentation in order. We strongly recommend ensuring that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of your exit flight and that you have at least 2 blank pages per country you plan to visit. Additionally, please carry printed copies of your passport with you during the tour.
VISAS!!! It’s important to be aware that if you are denied entry to a country for any reason, all additional costs or transportation required to re-join the tour will be at your own expense. While we are here to assist, please note that obtaining the necessary visas is your responsibility. Taking these precautions will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.
Meals and Activities on Tour
Each itinerary includes a specific meal plan and a detailed list of highlights and activities, so it's important to review the information carefully to know what’s covered and what might be at your own expense.
Breakfasts are included in your itinerary and will be provided either by an on-site or nearby restaurant, or prepared by your guide. This ensures you start each day well-fed and ready for your adventure.
Lunch is not included in the package. While we've scheduled time for meals, on longer driving days, we may not have the opportunity for a sit-down lunch at a restaurant. Instead, you'll find supermarkets, farm stalls, or takeaway options along the way to enjoy a quick bite on the road.
Dinners are not included in the package, but there are convenient options available. You can choose to dine at nearby or on-site restaurants, or take advantage of self-catering facilities available at certain locations. This flexibility allows you to enjoy your meals according to your preferences.
Weather and Climate
South Africa has a diverse climate, influenced by its varied geography. Here's a general overview:
Summer (December to February):
- Inland Areas (Highveld): Warm to hot with afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures range from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F).
- The Lowveld region/Kruger: located in the northeastern part of South Africa, primarily in Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces, has a subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The Lowveld experiences hot and humid summers, with temperatures often ranging from 25°C to 40°C (77°F to 104°F). January and February are typically the hottest months.
- Coastal Areas: Hot and humid along the east coast (Durban) with temperatures around 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F). The west coast (Cape Town) is warm and dry with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F).
- Rainfall: This is the wet season, with afternoon thunderstorms being common. The region receives most of its annual rainfall during this period, making the landscape lush and green.
Autumn (March to May):
- Generally mild and pleasant across the country, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The weather is stable with less rainfall.
Winter (June to August):
- Inland Areas: Cool to cold, especially at night and early mornings, with temperatures between 0°C to 18°C (32°F to 64°F). Snow can fall in higher regions like the Drakensberg Mountains.
- The Lowveld region/kruger: Winters are mild and dry, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 27°C (59°F to 81°F). Nights and early mornings can be cooler, sometimes dropping to around 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F).
- Coastal Areas: Mild with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). The western Cape (Cape Town) experiences its rainy season, while the east coast (Durban) remains relatively warm and dry.
- Rainfall: Winter is the dry season, with little to no rainfall. The landscape becomes more arid, and the vegetation thins out, making it an ideal time for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources.
Spring (September to November):
- Warm and pleasant, similar to autumn. Flowers bloom, especially in regions like Namaqualand, which is famous for its springtime wildflower display. Temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).
Overall, South Africa's climate is moderate with plenty of sunny days, making it a year-round destination. However, the best time to visit depends on the activities you're interested in, such as game viewing, beach vacations, or hiking.
Malaria
Malaria in South Africa is mostly confined to specific regions, particularly in the northeastern parts of the country. Here's a breakdown of the malaria risk areas:
- High-Risk Areas:
Kruger National Park and Surrounding Areas:
- Location: Northeastern part of Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces.
- Description: This is the most well-known malaria area in South Africa, including popular safari destinations such as Kruger National Park, and the adjacent private game reserves (e.g., Sabi Sand, Timbavati).
Far Northern KwaZulu-Natal:
- Location: The northern coastal areas near the borders with Mozambique and Eswatini.
- Description: This includes areas like Tembe Elephant Park and iSimangaliso Wetland Park, particularly near the Mozambican border.
- Moderate-Risk Areas:
- Eastern Limpopo Province:
- Location: Areas bordering Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
- Description: Includes the Pafuri and Punda Maria regions in the far northern parts of Kruger National Park.
- Low to No-Risk Areas:
Most of South Africa:
- Location: Major cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, and the central and southern parts of the country.
- Description: These areas are generally malaria-free, and no precautions are typically required.
Best Times to Visit (Low Risk):
- The winter months (June to September) are generally lower risk for malaria as mosquito activity decreases due to cooler and drier conditions.
Precautions:
- If traveling to a high-risk area, it’s advisable to take antimalarial medication and use preventive measures such as insect repellent, protective clothing, and sleeping under mosquito nets.
Always consult with a healthcare provider before traveling to these areas to get the most current advice and the appropriate malaria prophylaxis.
